How many times have you been tempted to take the road less traveled?  Renowned poet Robert Frost gave this advice that rings through ages.

Two roads diverged in a wood and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

It rings true throughout my life as well.  What did you do as a child that you wish you had continued to do? Is there something you still want to do, but hesitate to take that step?

Hardly anyone I know is able to sew a dress.  When I was a girl, I simply believed I could sew because my mother had always made me an Easter dress with puffed sleeves and a big gathered skirt.  Frankly, I wanted more tailored sleeves, but I loved to twirl around and around in those skirts.

When I was in sixth grade I decided I could make my own skirt and I did.  Then I decided to make a dress–without a pattern, like my mother did.  I did and the capped sleeves tore out because I didn’t know how to do it right.  My mother was very patient.  When I yelled and threw the scissors across the room, she said, “Now, Renae, I think it is time to put things away now.”  And I did, but I didn’t quit.

I learned to use patterns all on my own and eventually I designed and made my own wedding dress.  I sewed many matching dresses and school clothes for my eight daughters and even a sport coat for my husband.  What if I hadn’t taken that road less traveled?

I wouldn’t be making pretty puffed sleeves out of filmy organza for my granddaughter’s baptism dress.  She is so excited and I am, too.  We will both remember how beautiful she looks.  The dress was worn by someone else for their special day, but now it is Vashti’s and it will have puffed sleeves made by her adoring Grandma.

It usually isn’t easy to take the road less traveled.  It would be traveled more if it were.  Only those who have determination and vision for the possibilities that lie ahead on that road will step onto it.  Oh, the joy of seeing that vision become real for myself and for others.  I dare you to dust off a dream and take the road less traveled now.  I am taking piano lessons after over fifty years of giving up.  I love it.

Simple Self-Coaching Tip:

Choose just one thing on your road less traveled.  Spend five minutes journaling about it.  Are you a little bit excited about it–maybe a lot.  Go ahead, take the first step onto your road less traveled and then keep going, one step at a time.  I guarantee you will look back years from now with joy and gratitude.  Good for you!!

Today we attended two grandchildren’s graduation from high school.  Fortunately they attended the same high school which made it much easier for us.

Watching nearly 600 good looking, excited and hopeful young people receive their diplomas made me think of the class I am teaching on Saturday about ‘life purpose.’ I wasn’t thinking about my life purpose when I graduated from high school.  My purpose was to get out of our little farm town and off to college with the hope of learning something interesting and finding a good husband.

I think it would serve our children well to help them start thinking of their life purpose before they leave home for the big outside world. How could we do that?  It would be different than the question we asked our children every year on their birthday, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  They automatically replied, “Garbage man,” a favorite of our son who is now a CEO or “A movie star” or, “I don’t know.”  In any case, I wasn’t asking the right question.

Now I ask my grandchildren, “What do you love to do?”  “What makes you happy?”  “What do you want to do to serve others?” I encourage them to talk about those questions and I follow through, encouraging them to answer those questions over and over again as they go through life.  Somewhere along the way, they will discover a reason for doing what they do.  They will know what they were sent here to do and they will love doing it.

At graduation dinner I asked my 21 year old grandson what he would be majoring in at college this fall.  He quickly and enthusiastically replied, “Digital media.  Everyone thought I would change my mind as I got closer to college, but I have always loved it and that’s what I am going to do.”

He has been making movies since he was in grade school.  Yes, he loves it.  He has a passion for it.  Next time I will ask him why he wants to do it. Then he will begin to tell me about his life purpose–the thing that drives his passion.  What drives your passion?  What is your life purpose?
